Abstract

This text is an analysis of El desierto (2005), by Carlos Franz, one of the latest novels that deal with dictatorship in Chile. Its singularity consists on the antithetic actors and discourses that are put in motion, to enunciate a complex and contradictory truth. Fathers and sons, civilian and military world, people in exile and people who return to their homeland, the written law and the rituals, the sacred and the profane, the festive and the bleak, confront each other creating a unique complex totality, as in the classic novels belonging to the Latin American Boom.
