Abstract

La viuda de Apablaza, a classic piece of Chilean theatre, continues to be acclaimed by audiences and critics. There seems to be a consensus on interpreting the play as a tragedy. By reconstructing the interpretative trajectory of the play from the academy and retrieving elements of the theatrical practices that gave rise to it, this article seeks to rescue certain aspects of the text that, although very relevant, have been left aside. This allows us to enrich our interpretation of the play, while at the same time criticize a university hegemony in interpreting Chilean theatrical history.
